Reflections on My Journey Through Pokémon's Universe:

By Lars Guo

Published: April 2, 2024

Opening message: Hi folks! This blog is about my thoughts on Pokemon ranging from the anime, games, and merchandise. I hope you enjoy it!

Side note: It is important to keep in mind that most of this is my opinion. If you agree, great. If you don't agree, there is nothing wrong with that. I will say with the exception of the strongest grass starter because this was proved to be true. I am also not sponsored by Pokemon either.

Pokemon Journey: My Pokemon journey all started when my brothers introduced me to Pokemon. My first game that I played was Pokemon Yellow. My brothers loaned me the original Game Boy in order to play it. My first Pokemon was Pikachu because it was the first and only starter you can begin with that particular game. Pikachu as a side note is the Pokemon mascot for all Pokemon and the anime followed closely with that. That is how I got into Pokemon. I watched the anime all the way to the Sinnoh region, which is generation 4. I really liked it a lot. I have watched that since I was a kid. My first ever Pokemon game I personally owned was Pokemon Emerald which is Generation 3 Pokemon game. I owned the Game Boy Advance which I believe was the only console at that point I fully owned. Traditionally My brother and I shared handheld consoles until the Nintendo DS Lite. Pokemon Emerald was difficult to play. My true first starter that I had in a Pokemon game that I personally owned was the fire starter, Torchic. I didn't really know what to choose and my knowledge of Pokemon was actually quite limited at the time. The true best starter for that game was Mudkip which was the water starter. I played that game for hours. My brother helped me a lot while playing Pokemon during my times as a kid. To this day, he updates me on video games but I am on my own for playing the games themselves which makes sense since I am an adult of course. I got sick of the anime because Ash Ketchum was a really annoying protagonist. The side characters like Brock, May, Dawn, Misty, etc were super interesting. Team Rocket had some interesting ways of causing issues when stealing Pokemon. Their blast off was cool. The Pokemon rivals also were good in the anime. Gary's stuck up attitude gave life to the anime. I think the best rival that Ash had was definitely Paul. His character and personality definitely made for a great rivalry. His and Ash's views are so different which makes it great to watch especially their matches. Ash lost many of his matches against Paul and Ash showed growth as a trainer. After that, I pretty much grew out of Pokemon. Pokemon games, I played every main game and most remakes on the Nintendo consoles. Generation 1: Pokemon Yellow, and Fire Red/Leaf Green (one of those), Generation 2 remake: Heart Gold I think, Generation 3: Emerald and its remake, Generation 4: Diamond and I didn't play its remake, Generation 5 Black and White I and II, Generation 6 and 7 ,which were Sun/Moon and X/Y, Generation 8's Shield, and Generation 9 Scarlet and Violet. I also collected a great deal of merchandise including plushies, figures, etc.

Favorite games: My favorite games are Black/White I and II, Heart Gold, and Pokemon Emerald for nostalgic reasons.

Least favorite games: Pokemon Shield because of the rival and lack of creativity. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, which is not a main game, was too difficult and was frustrating.

Favorite Pokemon: Fuecoco, which is the generation 9's fire starter, Torchic which is Generation 3's fire starter, Bulbasaur which is the generation 1's grass starter, Turtwig which is the grass starter Generation 4, and Applutun are my favorite Pokemon.

Least Favorite Pokemon: My least favorite ones are bug types, ice types, Eevee and its evolution line, Meowscarata, most grass type Pokemon with the exceptions anything listed above, Nuzleaf, Ferrothorn and its evolution line, and strong grass types, and most weak Pokemon.

Favorite Plush: My favorite plush is Fuecoco because it is absolutely adorable.

Honorable mentions for Pokemon plushies I like: My honorable mentions are Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Applutun, Totodile, Piplup, and Turtwig.

Least favorite: I don't have any in particular least favorite ones.

Strongest starters and their lines: I think Fuecoco, Mudkip, and Bulbasaur are the strongest starters.

Fun facts:

  1. I did not consider buying a Fuecoco plush until I saw it in Japan. Even then, I almost didn't get it. It has always been my favorite generation 9 starter.

  2. The only game sets that I finished are Pokemon Violet and Scarlet.

  3. The first game I ever played in Japanese with no subtitles was Pokemon Scarlet.

  4. Bulbasaur was always my favorite grass starter. It was adorable and powerful.

  5. Fuecoco and its evolution line were my most valuable Pokemon in both of its runs for Generation 9. It is a tank that hits hard.

  6. Lucario is my favorite Pokemon to play in Smash Bros. It is also one of my more reliable Pokemon that I use.

  7. Most games, I almost always had an Aerodactyl.

  8. I used to have the Pokemon play soccer with my dad in the family room.

  9. Fuecoco was the only basic Pokemon that I put on my OU, which is the best tier excluding ones with top legendary Pokemon, on a team with a serious team on Pokemon Showdown.

  10. Fuecoco was the first Instagram that I made that specifically about that Pokemon. Pikachu was the second.

  11. Fuecoco Instagram was the strongest in terms of making its own Instagram base with minimal assistance from my Instagram accounts.

  12. Pikachu Instagram is the only Instagram that didn't get any help from Instagram accounts.

  13. My favorite Fuecoco picture is of them eating movie popcorn just before seeing the Hunger Games prequel.

  14. I played Pokemon Go but it wasn't my favorite game to play. I like the concept of it though. Pokemon Go is a mobile app.

  15. I played the most hours on Pokemon Emerald. I think it exceeded one thousand hours.

  16. I never finished the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.

  17. I have a total of 19 Pokemon plushies as of January 25, 2024.

  18. 8 Pokemon out of my 19 Pokemon are from Japan as of January 25, 2024.

  19. Fuecoco is the only Pokemon that I have 5 Pokemon plushies.

  20. I have 2 copies of all of the generation 1 starters excluding Pikachu.

  21. I went to many Pokemon Centers in Japan.

  22. I played Pokemon Snap before on the original game console and the remake.

  23. I don't have a favorite pokeball.

The ultimate Pokemon game I want the most: I hope that one day the Pokemon company will create a game where all of the starters can go to the regions that they didn't originate and we see how they fare against different gym leaders, champions, elite four, bad guys, rivals, etc. This of course has to be done right otherwise this isn't worth it. Only generation 2 Pokemon games allow players to face one other Pokemon region at all which is in Kanto which is in generation 1 games.
