Essential Tips for Thoughtful Gift Giving This Season

By Lars GuoPublished: November 11, 2025

Opening Message:

Hi Folks! The holiday season is quickly approaching, and nothing beats receiving a few small words of wisdom on how to find the perfect gift for someone special. Keep in mind that gifts do not have to be expensive, with a few exceptions such as weddings, and even those can often be negotiated. I also want to share a quick disclaimer. While there will be a few examples of gift experiences I have received that are mentioned for illustration purposes, this does not mean that any other gift is less appreciated. These examples are here simply to inspire ideas and demonstrate how thoughtful gifts have made an impact in my life. This advice list also assumes that the person you are buying for does not have a specific wish list and may only express general categories of what they like.

1. Get Photograph Based Gifts

Photo-based gifts are a wonderful place to start because they capture moments that cannot be replaced. Photographs of your favorite times with loved ones are always one of a kind. Creating a photo album filled with cherished memories, even without the recipient included in every photo, shows true thoughtfulness. Magnets and mugs with meaningful pictures also make great choices. I once gave my friend a wedding gift that included photography bookmarks and a photo album, which turned out to be very meaningful.

2. Make It an Experience

Gifts do not have to be material. They can be experiences that create lasting memories. Tickets to a favorite movie, concert, or event are wonderful ideas. It could even be as grand as a trip. Experience based gifts are perfect for those who want something special without adding clutter to their space. Treating someone to a meal is also a great way to celebrate. My family friends used to bring me to Chuck E. Cheese for my birthday, which I truly appreciate looking back. For a graduation gift, one of my aunts treated me to an incredible massage from a professional therapist. I was old enough to appreciate it fully, and it was amazing.

3. Create Your Own Gifts

Handmade gifts show time, effort, and care. My friend once made me an art piece featuring Itachi Uchiha, my favorite Naruto character, alongside an anime style version of me. It now has a permanent place of honor in my room. My cousins also send me their artwork every holiday season, which I treasure deeply. I have made my own gifts too, including jars, wreaths, and finger knitted scarves. Once, after showing a friend a video I made, she complimented the scarf my character wore, so I made her one as a graduation gift. Small handmade tokens such as wreath keychains or decorated jars can be surprisingly meaningful.

4. Gift Cards and Monetary Gifts

Gift cards and money are often perfect for teenagers and adults who prefer choosing what they want. Even a small amount of extra spending money can make a big difference. When I received a VISA gift card from family friends while I was unemployed, it gave me the freedom to buy small gifts and items I needed.

For my graduation, I received money from several relatives, which helped a lot since I was traveling from New York to Florida and then to California. It was a thoughtful, practical gift that truly helped.

5. Invest in Health and Well Being

Giving gifts that encourage a healthy lifestyle is always appreciated. Cookbooks and exercise equipment are thoughtful ways to promote health. My parents once got me dumbbells for Christmas, which helped strengthen my wrists, and a food chopper that saves time and money when preparing meals. For mental wellness, experience gifts such as a massage gift card are perfect. I have received one before, and it helped me relax during a stressful time.

6. Food Based Gifts

Food is one of the most universal gifts. Chocolates, cookies, and baked goods can warm anyone’s heart. I once got my friend their favorite Ferrero chocolates for their birthday, and they loved it. My family also has a long standing tradition of baking brown sugar nut cookies for my dad, a recipe passed down through generations.

One of my friends once gave me candy cane Kisses for my birthday, which meant so much since they are my favorite candy. I have also gifted baking books and received homemade cakes, each one full of love.

7. Invest in Education

Educational gifts are both practical and meaningful. For children, piggy banks teach valuable lessons about saving money. Books are excellent for learners of all ages. I bought my niece bilingual Spanish and English books to encourage her language learning.

My parents once gifted me the Genki I textbook and workbook to help me begin learning Japanese. I later used them in college and still consider them one of the most valuable educational gifts I ever received.

8. Invest in Comfort

Comfort based gifts are especially great for children but can also delight adults. Plushies, soft blankets, and cozy items bring warmth and nostalgia. I have a life sized Fuecoco plush that stays on my bed and gets plenty of affection. My niece’s teddy bear, Oso, travels everywhere with her. Even my brother joined in the fun. After seeing my Totodile plush, he decided to get his own.

9. Support Their Hobbies

One of the best ways to show thoughtfulness is to invest in someone’s hobbies. Whether it is trading card games like Magic the Gathering, Yu Gi Oh, or Pokémon, or creative pursuits like music and sports, supporting what they love goes a long way.

When buying gifts for collectors or gamers, make sure you know what type or quality they prefer. For example, certain deck boxes or card sleeves protect valuable cards better. My friend loved the Digimon card packs I gave them because they were not after any specific cards.

For musicians, something as simple as a high quality guitar pick can make a difference. For athletes, sportswear, basketballs, or golf gear are fantastic investments that fuel passion and performance.

10. Offer Acts of Service

Not all gifts come in a box. Sometimes, offering your time and help is the most meaningful gift of all. Cooking a meal, cleaning, grocery shopping, or helping with chores can ease someone’s daily stress. Babysitting or pet sitting can also make a big difference for busy friends or family members. Sometimes, simply being there for someone when they need you most is the greatest gift you can give.
