Valuable Takeaways from My Experiences with Yugioh

Opening Message

Hi folks! This blog is about what I have learned from Yugioh. Yugioh is a children’s anime series that revolves around our shy protagonist, Yugi, and his journey to becoming a top duelist. These are simply my thoughts and reflections on the show. Please note that this blog contains spoilers. I hope you enjoy reading and remain respectful in the comments. Thank you!

Lesson 1: Fighting for Others Gives You a Stronger Drive Than Fighting for Yourself

In the show, Yami fights for others, and his determination to defend innocent people is what drives him to become stronger. He rescued Yugi’s grandfather and protected many people, even when there was nothing for him to gain personally.

During my time as a referee, I learned a similar lesson. I was often shy about standing up for myself when coaches or players criticized referees and their calls. However, when a younger referee was unfairly criticized, I had no problem stepping in respectfully and defending them. I did not care about being yelled at because I was standing up for someone else.

Lesson 2: Understanding Mental Health and Its Impact on Heroes

Yugioh explores several mental health struggles, including depression and guilt. After losing to Rafael, Yami became overwhelmed with guilt because he played a card that put players’ souls at risk. Yugi sacrificed his soul so Yami could keep his own, leaving Yami devastated and depressed.

This emotional pain affected his duel against Weevil, who constantly played mind games with him. Yami’s inner darkness even caused one of his legendary cards to stop cooperating with him. At one point, Yami became so angry that he repeatedly attacked Weevil’s monster until Tea finally stopped him.

As someone who has dealt with self-anger and regret, I could deeply relate to Yami’s emotions. I understand what it feels like to look back at a mistake, ask yourself why you acted out of character, and feel disappointed in yourself afterward.

Lesson 3: The Value of Friendship

One of the biggest themes in Yugioh is friendship. Whenever Yami fought for his friends, his strength and determination grew stronger. In Season 1, Pegasus could constantly read Yami’s mind during their duel. However, with teamwork and friendship, Yugi and Yami were able to block Pegasus’ mind-reading abilities and win the match.

In Season 3, Yami nearly gave up against Noah’s Deck Master monster because victory seemed impossible. Yet, the encouragement of his friends gave him the willpower to continue.

In Season 4, Yami nearly surrendered during his battle against Dartz because he had almost no way to win. However, the sacrifices and support of his friends inspired him to keep fighting and eventually win the duel.

In my own life, I learned the importance of friendship during difficult times. Spending time with friends in person or even talking over the phone helped me get through many challenges.

Lesson 4: Helping Others Pays Off in the Long Run

After Yugi lost to Kaiba in a duel where Kaiba threatened suicide, Yugi lost confidence in himself and struggled mentally. Earlier in the story, Mai had lost all of her Star Chips, which were necessary to enter Pegasus’ Castle. Yami helped her recover them.

Later, Mai repaid that kindness by giving Yugi and Yami the Star Chips they needed to enter the castle. She also encouraged them to push through their mental struggles and duel for their friends.

In my own experience, I found that helping others often comes back in unexpected ways. At work, I went out of my way to help customers by taking photos for them, drying off wet chairs, and providing customer service beyond what was expected. In return, I built strong relationships with regular customers, received tips, free food and drinks, and gained a group of people who were always happy to see me.

On my last day at work, the band that regularly performed there even played “Celebration” at my request as a special farewell. More importantly, it felt rewarding to positively impact other people’s days.

Lesson 5: It’s Not Always About Winning

Yugioh teaches that losing is not always a bad thing. In Season 2, Yugi intentionally lost a duel to Rebecca after teaching her the importance of friendship, even though he had the winning card ready. Rebecca remained loyal to Yugi afterward.

Another important moment occurred in Season 1 when Yugi sacrificed victory to save Kaiba’s life. This decision later proved important because Kaiba became a valuable ally who helped defeat enemies Yugi could not have beaten alone.

In my own experience as a soccer camp coach, I sometimes lost games intentionally while playing against seven-year-olds. Winning aggressively against young children was neither impressive nor worth risking injuries. What mattered more was teaching them skills and helping them improve as players.

Lesson 6: Don’t Give Up

Life comes with setbacks, struggles, and painful moments. Yugioh constantly reminds viewers to keep moving forward despite hardships. Yami had to continue fighting after losing Yugi in Season 4, and Yugi had to recover emotionally after losing to Kaiba in Season 1.

I experienced a similar lesson during my seventh-grade basketball championship game. My team was losing badly and seemed finished. However, through hard work, persistence, and some luck, we made a huge comeback and won the championship.

Another example came during my first semester of college. I struggled academically and physically because I was not feeling well. However, by attending office hours, seeking extra help, and continuing to work hard, I finished the semester successfully, earned exemptions from finals, and maintained a strong GPA.

Lesson 7: Being an Unorthodox Thinker Can Lead to Creative Solutions

In the Season 1 finale, Pegasus could read Yami’s mind, making it nearly impossible to keep strategies secret. Yugi solved this problem by switching minds with Yami, preventing Pegasus from reading the correct thoughts. I learned the value of unconventional thinking in my own life as well. While studying Japanese, I wanted a distraction-free environment. Inspired by someone using an MP3 player as a Kindle alternative, I realized MP3 players could also store videos and audio for studying. This became a creative way for me to immerse myself in Japanese without distractions from phones or social media.

Another example involved finding a wallet that could hold many cards and coins. Most wallets I found lacked enough space. Eventually, I repurposed an old point-and-shoot camera case. The smaller pocket held coins while the main compartment stored my cards and cash. It ended up being far more useful than a traditional wallet.

Closing Message

I hope you found these lessons useful and interesting! Yugioh taught me many valuable life lessons about friendship, perseverance, helping others, mental strength, and creative thinking. I look forward to sharing more blogs with you in the future. Have a great day!
