Signs You Might Need a New Denshi Jisho: A Helpful Guide

Opening message: Have you ever had trouble getting your Denshi Jisho to work? Let’s go over some tips that might help you fix the issue. Disclaimer: I did take some advice from Google, so your experience may differ.

Background: I got my Denshi Jisho years ago. For those who may not know, a Denshi Jisho is a Japanese electronic dictionary. I like using it because it’s distraction-free—it focuses only on dictionary work. I’ve already shared a detailed review of my Denshi Jisho here.

On March 5th, I was at the library and wanted to use my Denshi Jisho to avoid distractions from phone notifications. My goal was to write some sentences in Japanese and look up words. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t turn on. Here’s what I did to troubleshoot.

Step 1: Clean your Denshi Jisho. Sometimes dirt or dust builds up in the ports, preventing proper charging or function. A quick clean can make a big difference.

Step 2: Check for damage. Inspect the device for water damage, loose buttons, or cracks. Any of these could cause the machine to stop working.

Step 3: Replace the batteries. My Denshi Jisho takes two AA batteries. I once had a problem that was solved simply by swapping out the old ones. This time, though, it didn’t work.

Step 4: Try charging with a USB cable. I had forgotten my Denshi Jisho could charge via USB. Once I tried this, it finally worked again. Maybe the batteries had gotten too cold or weak. I still don’t know why it requires both AA batteries and USB charging, but this step saved me.

Step 5: Consult a technician. If cleaning, checking, and charging don’t work, bring your device to a technician. Denshi Jisho models aren’t overly complex compared to modern devices, so a professional should be able to help.

Step 6: Consider buying a new one. If nothing else works, it may be time for a replacement. A reliable Denshi Jisho helps create a focused study environment, which you won’t always get if you rely solely on Google Translate. I recommend choosing a model with handwriting input for kanji. You can find Denshi Jisho on Amazon, Rakuten Ichiba, and eBay. Just be cautious with secondhand purchases—always check reviews and quality before buying.

Closing message: Did these tips help you fix your denshi jisho? Could they apply to other electronics as well? Would you consider getting one yourself? Thank you for reading—I hope this post was useful! I look forward to sharing more with you in the next blog. Have a great day!
