Opening Message:

Hi folks! I hope you're all doing well! In today’s blog, I’m going to share how I got into anthropology. I was an anthropology major while pursuing my Bachelor's degree, and I haven’t yet gone into much detail about this topic, so I thought it would be a great opportunity to do so. I hope you enjoy reading this post as well as all my past and future blogs. This is simply my story and experiences, so please be respectful of that. Thank you, and I hope you enjoy!

Background:

My journey into anthropology started at a very young age through my exposure to international cultures. Born in China and raised in America, I was introduced to Chinese culture early on, and my brothers’ strong influence played a big role in shaping my interest in various cultures. If you’re curious about the beginnings of my interest in international cultures, I’ve written an article that delves deeper into my background. You can read it here: How I Got Into International Cultures.

How Do I View Things Differently as an Anthropology Major?

As an anthropology major, I’ve learned to approach life from different cultural perspectives. I came to understand that other cultures have distinct ways of life, which has allowed me to better navigate language barriers. I’ve worked in various environments where many staff members had limited English proficiency, and being able to speak Spanish has been crucial for bridging communication gaps. This also opened doors to making friends from diverse backgrounds. Anthropology taught me the importance of being culturally relative rather than ethnocentric, which is something I carry with me in all my interactions.

My curiosity about languages grew, and I became interested in learning Spanish, German, and Japanese. If you'd like to learn more about my journey with languages, check out these posts:

What Do I Like About Anthropology?

I love anthropology because it combines so many fascinating fields—language, culture, history, psychology, and sociology. These are topics I’ve always been interested in and have developed a strong passion for over time. Anthropology also gave me the opportunity to take foreign language courses, which helped me complete my degree while pursuing languages like Japanese and Spanish. This allowed me to fulfill my passion for international cultures while also achieving my academic goals. To learn more about how my love for international cultures began, check out my article: How I Got Into International Cultures.

Why Did I Choose Anthropology as My Major?

Anthropology perfectly embodies what I enjoy because it focuses on culture and language—two things that have always been central to my life, based on my background and personal interests. You’ll see this theme reflected in many of my blogs, as I often write about my love for international experiences. Here are a couple of articles you might find interesting:

What Do I Hope to Do With My Degree?

With my anthropology degree, I hope to secure a job where I can use my knowledge of Japanese and travel to new places. I’d also love to continue blogging, as it’s something I truly enjoy. It would be amazing to meet people from different cultures, make new friends, and use the foreign languages I know to bridge cultural gaps.

Closing Message:
