Crafting Dreams, One Nook at a Time

Opening Message:

Hi everyone! I hope all of you are doing well and that you have been enjoying the content that has been posted and will be posted in the future. This blog post is about my creation of a book nook diorama that I made on April 19th. I hope you enjoy this blog post and that it inspires you to create one yourself!

Background:

I created this book nook diorama because my internet was down and watching anime was not feasible at the time. It is not as enjoyable to watch anime on a phone compared to a TV. The internet being down also made it impossible for me to print out my usual Google Images that I use to create my dioramas, which is why this project required a change in materials. While it is simple to find a cardboard box, I chose not to use one because it did not match the aesthetic I was aiming for. I had also been watching do it yourself videos on building life size libraries, which inspired me to create one in a miniature format. This is the first diorama I have made without printer paper, ink, cardboard, or tape.

Where did I start:

Truthfully, I did not have much of a plan. I already had some mini composition notebooks that I used as a reference for finding the vessel, chair, and other accessories. I went to Michael’s near my residence to shop for materials. First, I explored the wood creation section, which has a wide variety of boxes. I used my composition notebooks and my Fuecoco plushie to estimate the size I needed. I found a beautiful wooden framed box with glass walls that became the vessel for my diorama and it met all of my requirements.

The next step was finding the perfect chair, which was more challenging. I came across a black jewelry box in the bead section that worked perfectly. It fits a pillow inside and fits well within the vessel. The velvet material adds an elegant touch to the seating. I searched for miniature books but was unsuccessful because the sizes did not work for the space. I also considered adding a fireplace or additional furniture, but there was not enough room, and it did not match the aesthetic I had in mind. I did find cushions that fit perfectly with the reading nook theme, adding comfort and helping fill empty spaces. After selecting everything, I made sure to use an in-store coupon from the website, which helped me save money.

How did I make the Diorama?

First, I placed the composition notebooks to the left of the door. These may eventually be replaced with smaller books to emphasize a reading nook rather than a writing space. Next, I positioned the velvet box in the upper left corner where the notebooks meet. Since not all the cushions could fit inside, I placed one cushion in the box. I had the option to leave the box open for a seating effect or close it and place a cushion on top. I chose to close it and added a white and blue pillow on top. The remaining pillows were used to stabilize the velvet box so it would not touch the far wall. The blue pillows also serve as a small footrest for the plushies, adding a functional and narrative element to the design. This entire setup was completed without printer paper, ink, cardboard, tape, or scissors.

My thoughts about the end project:

I really like the velvet box and cushion combination. I do wish I had smaller books to make the space feel more like a reading nook. The cushions could have been lighter in color to brighten the space, as it currently feels a bit dark. The diorama is not as plush friendly as I had hoped. My action figures fit better, but their expressions did not match the scene. I appreciate the simplicity of the design instead of adding more complex features like the book wall I originally planned. The larger books provide a unique back support element that adds character to the piece. While the project turned out well, it was more expensive than expected. However, using higher quality materials improved the overall appearance. I also wish I had planned more before going to the store instead of improvising. Despite that, I am very happy with the final result and have no regrets about trying a new style of diorama.

Closing Message:

Would you make a diorama like this? If so, what materials would you use to create your own book nook? Do you like the one I made? Please let me know. Thank you so much for reading this blog post. I look forward to sharing the next one with you. Stay safe, happy, and healthy. Enjoy the spring weather and have a wonderful day.
