Analyzing the Cinematic Elements of the Blue Lock Movie

Opening Message

Hi Folks! I hope you’re doing well! I hope you’ve been enjoying the blogs that have been posted. This blog delves into my thoughts on the Blue Lock movie, how I got into the show, and whether I would recommend the movie to you. I’ll also include links to any referenced content.

Disclaimer: These are just my personal thoughts, and I am not a professional movie critic. I hope you enjoy it nonetheless! There will be spoilers.

Background

I first got into Blue Lock after watching a YouTube channel called Lessons from Anime, which analyzed the lessons drawn from the anime. You can find my thoughts on the YouTube channel in the next section. The action-packed nature of the series and the lessons discussed intrigued me, making it sound like a must-watch. I ended up binge-watching it over five days and absolutely loved it. This happened shortly before my Japan trip in 2023, which led me to search for Blue Lock merchandise while I was there.

What is Blue Lock?

Blue Lock is a Japanese soccer sports anime that emphasizes individuality over teamwork, unlike most sports anime. The protagonist strives to become the best striker in the world. However, the movie takes a different approach by shifting the perspective to an antagonist, showing his transformation from being unmotivated and detached from soccer to someone determined to improve and succeed.

Pros:

Blue Lock movie has many pros. It shows it off from a different character's point of view. I have not seen that before in a lot of other movies except for Songs of Ballard from the Hunger Games Prequel. I thought it was well written. The anime is fun and exciting. I am glad there is Japanese voice acting and English subtitles. The story and plot are parallel to how the anime show runs which is nice. I went into this cold turkey not knowing too much about what the movie was going to be but I thought getting a different angle was great. It is great to hear the character's thoughts while playing other opponents and how they view the main protagonist in the show. I like how they kept with the same anime style they use with the anime show itself. I hope they do this with different characters as well because it was really interesting. It would proportionately be like watching a Naruto movie seeing Itachi's views and life story in a form of the movie while seeing how Naruto deals with him in their encounters. I like how they make sure they properly introduce the characters in the same style as the anime for Blue Lock. That was very well played and it was a great way to stay true to the story.

Cons:

There are a couple of cons. There were a couple of nude scenes. They did not last long but it did not leave a good taste in my mouth. The problem is that it is sorta a repeat of Blue lock condensed to an hour from Isagi’s journey. I think they could have made a few more differences here and there. Overall still well done. It felt like watching the Blue Lock anime more than a movie, which I do not know how I feel about.

Should You Watch It?

If you enjoy Blue Lock and soccer in general, this movie is perfect for you. Viewing the story from a different character’s perspective is interesting, though parts of it may feel repetitive. I would recommend watching it at home when it becomes available rather than in theaters. For those unfamiliar with sports anime or expecting a story centered around teamwork, this might not be the best fit. Non-sports anime fans might not find it as engaging. However, as a Blue Lock and sports anime enthusiast, I still think it’s worth watching—just in the right setting.
